Mystery over ‘horned monster’ that washed up on Spanish beach

Mystery, and a terrible stench, surrounds the discovery of the rotting corpse of an unidentified sea creature on a Spanish beach.

The horned head of the ‘monster’ was found detached from its 5m long body near Villaricos village in Almeria, with both in an advanced state of decomposition.

An unlucky swimmer found the remains before alerting authorities, who admit they are at a loss to identify it.

‘We have no idea what it can be, but it smelled bad, because it was so badly decomposed,’ said civil protection coordinator Maria Sanchez.

‘A lady found one part, and we helped her retrieve the rest.’

As tests by marine protection society Promar are carried out, speculation is rife that the creature could be a shark or an oarfish.
