Prominent atheist Richard Dawkins has provoked a surge of criticism after tweeting a statement that said: ‘All the world’s Muslims have fewer Nobel Prizes than Trinity College, Cambridge. They did great things in the Middle Ages, though.’
His declaration, which came on the same day of the Muslim holiday Eid al-Fitr, was lambasted for ‘promoting bigotry.’
The outspoken author of the best-selling The God Delusion, who has over 780,000 followers on Twitter, then continued his assertion with a slew of defenses including: ‘You can attack someone for his opinion. But for simply stating an intriguing fact?’ following with: ‘Muslims aren’t a race. What they have in common is a religion. Rather than Trinity, would you prefer the comparison with Jews? Google it.’
The high-profile academic and evolutionary biologist, who denounces organised religion, subsequently faced a wrath of scorn from tweeters, including comments from celebrities and journalists.
