The Lone Ranger on course to lose almost $190m for Disney


Disney’s The Lone Ranger looks set to be one of the biggest flops of the summer blockbuster season, with experts predicting it could lose the studio as much as £124m.

The movie – which stars Armie Hammer as the title character and Johnny Depp as his sidekick Tonto – came complete with a hefty price tag, costing around £139m to make.

But since its release in the US on July 4 it has failed to even crack the £60m mark, so far making around £55.5m at the North American box office and £114m worldwide.

And while those figures may ultimately allow the film to recoup its budget – given that it has yet to open in a number of countries including the UK – reported marketing costs of around £113m on top of the original budget have left it struggling to make a profit.
