Guitar played by John Lennon and George Harrison sells for £269,000 at auction

A custom-made guitar played by John Lennon and George Harrison, of The Beatles, has sold for $408,000 (£269,000) at auction.

The famous instrument was given to Lennon’s friend Alexis ‘Magic Alex’ Mardas as a 25th birthday in 1967.

Mardas eventually sold the guitar in 2004 but it still has a plaque on the back which reads: ‘To Magic Alex/ Alexi thank you/ for been a friend/ 2-5-1967 John [sic]’.

The electric guitar, manufactured by VOX, was played by Lennon during the video for Hello, Goodbye in 1967, while Harrison used it to play I Am The Walrus on the Magical Mystery Tour in the same year.

The California-based auction house Julien’s Auctions has not revealed the identity of the buyer in New York this weekend.

The auction took place at the Hard Rock Café in Manhattan on Saturday and greatly exceeded initial expectations of between $200,000 and $300,000.
