An 18-year-old girl is dead after collapsing about two kilometres away from the finish line at the GoodLife Fitness Toronto marathon on Sunday.
Police didn’t reveal her name, but the Cape Breton Post identified the teen as Emma van Nostrand, a Grade 12 honour student at Riverview High School in Cape Breton. Her parents were also running in the event.
A family friend told the Cape Breton Post van Nostrand came from a “running family” and that “she was in good shape, she was a good runner.”
Toronto EMS said the girl had no pulse and was not breathing when she collapsed on Lake Shore Boulevard near Roncesvalles Avenue around 11:08 a.m.
Paramedics tried to revive her at the scene and while transporting her to hospital. Despite efforts to intubate the teenager to help her breathe and administer intravenous fluids and medication, her vital signs remained absent.
