Borussia Dortmund chief locks himself in Madrid toilet to ease the strain

The nail-biting climax to Borussia Dortmund’s semi-final victory over Real Madrid on Tuesday night proved to be a little too much to bare for the German club’s chairman, Hans-Joachim Watzke.

As the Bundesliga side clung on under an onslaught from the Madrid attack, Watzke could stand no more and locked himself in a Bernabeu toilet.

Two late goals had seen Dortmund’s comfortable 4-1 first-leg lead whittled down to 4-3 on aggregate, and Watzke knew that just one more goal from the Spanish giants would eliminate his team on away goals.

‘It seems like we only can do it with drama,’ said Watzke. ‘For the first time in my life I had to give up due to heart problems.

‘I went to the toilet for the last few minutes, locked myself in, covered my ears and looked at my watch. I had all kinds of thought going through my head.’
